State semifinals set

By Jeff Dahn

The state football playoff final fours are set in all six classes and there really aren’t any surprises.

The 4A semis, scheduled for Friday evening, should be two outstanding football games. The west side features Ankeny (11-1) vs. West Des Moines Valley (12-0) and the east bracket has Cedar Falls (11-1) vs. Cedar Rapids Washington (11-1). Washington beat Cedar Falls in the season-opener back in late August. The Tigers haven’t lost since. Washington is on a 10-game winning streak.

Check out the remaining eight teams in classes 2A and 3A, four games scheduled for Monday, Nov. 17. All eight teams stand 12-0. Any of the eight are state championship worthy.

Here’s My Back to the Door’s state championship game predictions, by class:

4A: C.R. Washington vs. W.D.M. Valley; 3A: S.C. Heelan vs. Pella; 2A: Solon vs. Central Lyon-GLR (for the third year in a row); 1A: West Branch vs. West Lyon; A: North Tama vs. Southern Cal; Eight-man: Stanton vs. … ah well, it doesn’t matter. No one’s come close to Stanton all season.

Complete semifinal pairings can be found in Sunday’s Gazette or at www.iahsaa.org.
