A must-read for all basketball players

February 16, 2009

What follows is a link to an incredible piece that appeared in Sunday’s New York Times Sunday Magazine. It was written by “Moneyball” author Michael Lewis and focuses on the contributions NBA player Shane Battier makes to the Houston Rockets.

Battier, a true scholar-athlete who graduated from Duke, doesn’t score a lot, doesn’t rebound a lot and doesn’t hand out a lot of assists, but every team he’s ever played on wins. Lewis is a statistical guru and the Rockets have started to use new stats to show a player’s worth no other NBA team is using. The new numbers – and this article - tell a compelling story about what a true all-star Battier is, and how the game of basketball should be played and how players should be evaluated. The article is lengthy, but I would encourage any basketball player out there to stay with it through its conclusion. Enjoy.
